We can also share our last watermelon that CAC started from seed in February and the whole congregation helped transplant in the spring. (Extra seedlings went to NAYA Community Garden, Eloheh Farm and Vernon School Garden).

We'll start with our Rose & Thorn check in. Our youth in Children’s Accompaniment Circle are then invited to join as the Seat of Our Pants Players in acting out today's Ancient Sacred text (with costumes!) There will be an option to act out Exodus 1:8-2:10 for the congregation as their final Lectio Divina reading!

Join us as we gather to celebrate the installation and commitment of Alison Killeen into leadership at Leaven Community and Salt and Light Lutheran Church. We will make a public commitment to Alison, and she will make a commitment to the community. Together we commit to BE, LOVE and ACT TOGETHER, as we deepen relationships and create change for more equitable, diverse, and thriving neighborhoods for all.

Calling all Singers and Musicians!
During the installation service for Rev. Alison Killeen, Leaven's "Seat of the Pants" choir and musicians will be performing  "One Voice" by the Wailin Jennys and "Chico Gospel" by MaMuse. We'ld love to have you join us and have two rehearsal opportunites at Leaven Community Center, 5431 NE 20th Ave, Portland, OR 97211.

What is an Installation?
An installation is a rite practiced by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and other Christian traditions where a pastor is publicly placed into their role in a specific congregation. While ordination happens only once in a pastor's ministry, an installation happens each time they begin serving in a new congregation or role. At this event, the Bishop of the Oregon Synod of the ELCA will install Alison as pastor at Salt and Light Lutheran Church. All are welcome to attend the Lutheran installation rite.

Also at this event, the broader Leaven Community will “install” Alison as their Director-Organizer through a commitment ceremony and ritual blessing hosted by the community. The Planning Team is taking care to ensure that many of the varied voices in our community are represented. Please join us!

*Clergy are invited to vest for the installation rite. The liturgical color for the installation will be red.*

EASTER WEEKEND

Good Friday, April 7, 6-7:30pm
Liberation Theology Stations of the Cross
Led by Mike Hogan, this year’s Good Friday observation will be a contemplative service featuring Stations of the Cross artwork by Argentinian artist, liberation theologian, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (1980) Adolfo Pérez Esquivel. 

Come ready to reflect on themes rooted in Latin American liberation theology and ground into how each of the stations are relevant to us in our Pacific Northwest context today.

Saturday, April 8, 10:00 am
Decorate the Sanctuary for Easter. Coffee and pastries will be available as we remove the purple Lenten fabric and candles and replace them with white and gold, the liturgical colors for Easter.

Easter Sunday - Service 10 am
Come on Easter Sunday at 10am to celebrate new life and rebirth at Salt and Light on Easter Sunday! We will sing, celebrate, breathe, and wonder at the buds and blossoms emerging into the world and within our hearts this spring. There will be a play space for our youngest folx in the sanctuary. 

Bring a houseplant (or two!)with you on Easter morning to decorate the sanctuary throughout the Easter Season (April 9-May 21). Carry your plant into the sanctuary with you on Sunday morning and place it near the altar. We will water and tend to your plants, which can be brought home on May 21. Be sure to label your plant so we remember whose is whose!

Easter Sunday - Easter Egg Hunt 11:30ish
Following the service we'll have an easter egg hunt for the kids and kids-at-heart! All children and youth will get the chance to seek and to find for around 30 mins. We'll meet and wait in the Sunroom while the Bunnies hide eggs and have candy and small gifts for all.

Easter Sunday - Pancake Breakfast 11:30ish 
Following the service we will share a pancake breakfast in the basement. If you’re interested in helping with setup, cleanup, or flipping pancakes,you can still sign up to volunteer right here.

Easter Egg Hunt - All Welcome!
After 11:30 all meet and wait in the Sunroom while the Bunnies hide eggs.

We have a plan for all youth get the chance to seek and to find for around 30 mins. We’ll have candy and small gifts for all. Afterwards the fun continues in the basement with a pancake brunch.

On Palm Sunday our young people led the way with the baby palms they transplanted for the altar.

Thank you to our CAC youth for their part in harvesting the writings of the congregation over the weeks of our Sacred Organizing Spiral process. Salt & Light Week of April 2-9, 2023

Sacred Circles, Sacred Spirals

This Lent, Salt and Light will return to our community organizing roots by reconnecting with one another through the sacred practice of “one-to-ones”. In these 40 days of Lent, all Salt and Light members are invited to hold four one-to-one conversations with each other, asking and responding to crucial questions about belonging, grief and community. We will take time in Sunday services to connect with each other and reflect on the fabric that keeps us together.

Family Dinner Church is a meal-embedded worship, centering connection and community, kid-friendly and rooted in ancient ritual, youth and parent leadership, holy play and holy mess - all around the table. A team of Westminster teens, young adults, and parents with kids came together to dream up this vision, where we take seriously the early church’s practice of worship around a literal meal, thus “family dinner.”

Good Friday: Liberation Theology Stations of the Cross

Led by Mike Hogan, this year’s Good Friday observation will be a contemplative service featuring Stations of the Cross artwork by Argentinian artist, liberation theologian, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (1980) Adolfo Pérez Esquivel. 

Come ready to reflect on themes rooted in Latin American liberation theology and ground into how each of the stations are relevant to us in our Pacific Northwest context today.

Easter - Sunday Service, Pancake Breakfast, Egg Hunt

CELEBRATE new life and rebirth in community at Salt and Light on Easter Sunday! We will sing, celebrate, breathe, and wonder at the buds and blossoms emerging into the world and within our hearts this spring.  Image source.

We need your help to make Easter happen!

🌱  BRING A HOUSEPLANT (or two!) with you on Easter morning to decorate the sanctuary throughout the Easter Season (April 9-May 21). We will water and tend to your plants, which can be brought home on May 21 or later. Make sure to label your plant so everyone remembers whose is whose!

🍓 BRING FRUIT to share at the Pancake Breakfast immediately following the service.
🐝 SIGN UP to usher, set up the sanctuary, or serve pancakes on Easter. (Correction: Set up the sanctuary is Saturday, April 8th (not 9th).
