Profiles in Courage and Humility: Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Life Decisions and Ours, A Prayerful Retreat for Such a Time as This
led by Pastor Mark Brocker, Pastor Roger Newell and Sue Newell, Pastor Terry Moe, and Sr. Dorothy Jean Beyer
Saturday, March 29, 2025
9:00 am- 4:00 pm
Benedictine Sisters’ Chapter Room
840 S. Main St., Mt. Angel, OR
You are invited to contemplate your major life decisions in light of the Eight Life Decisions of Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, pastor, theologian, Ecumenical Church leader, NAZI Resister, and Martyr (4 February 1906 – 9 April 1945). Opening reflection will be led by local pastor and Bonhoeffer scholar, Mark Brocker, from a draft of “Profiles in Courage and Humility: Bonhoeffer’s Eight Decisions,” the first chapter of a book he is currently writing.
Through prayer, lectio, meditation, ritual, writing, and small group interaction participants are invited to reflect on their own life decisions. How have decisions you have made affected your life? How has the Gospel been lived out (or not) through these decisions? What decisions are you currently discerning?
Led by the following leadership team: Pastor Mark Brocker, Theologian in Residence, St. Luke Lutheran, Portland; Pastor Roger Newell and Sue Newell, retired pastor and social worker, George Fox University, Newberg; Pastor Terry Moe, retired Lutheran pastor and community organizer, Portland; and Sr. Dorothy Jean Beyer, Benedictine Sisters of Mt Angel.
Together we aim to:
Open greater understanding of spiritual, political, and social forces then and now.
Deepen our search for personal and collective participation in the life of our communities.
Inspire and nurture ongoing connection and depth between our inner and outer worlds.
Give space to find courage and humility in living out our faith in the world today.
